Flair TV Movie Picks: Favela Rising

If you decide to spend a cold, Winter night at home instead of going out, I highly recommend renting the movie Favela Rising.

Favela Rising is a Brazilian documentary from 2006 that is set in one of the most dangerous slums in Rio de Janeiro. The documentary follows Anderson Sa, a man whose experiences growing up in the dangeous favelas caused him to create the band AfroReggae. AfroReggae, however, is not your typical band. Besides creating world-famous music, the band teaches young kids hip-hop music, the rhythms of the streets, and Afro-Brazilian dance. By introducing these highly at-risk youth to the powerful influences of music, the kids are bound in an influential, positive brotherhood, before they have the chance to be recruited into the gangs that fill the Brazilian favela's streets with drugs, violence and death. This is an incredibly powerful and interesting story about one man's ability to make a difference, and all of our abilities to overcome even the most challenging obstacles.
