Police Policy Comes Up Missing

When should fact trump policy? Jahmeshia Conner’s family wishes it did two weeks ago. Jahmeshia was last seen by her aunt on Nov. 15 when she boarded a bus to go home just seven blocks away. She never made it.

Jahmeshia’s mother thought she stayed with her aunt that night, but when she didn’t come home from school the next day, she called police. Police said they had to wait 48 hours before starting an investigation. Why? Priority missing cases involve children 10 and under. Jahmeshia was 12. Monday, two weeks after her disappearance, Jahmeshia’s beaten and strangled body was found in an alley.

Despite the pleadings of her family that she just did not fit the profile of a runaway, that she was a good child, police followed their Policy. Why no Amber alert? Why classify her as an “endangered runaway?” And the question no one wants to explore: Would Jahmeshia be alive today had she been a “priority” to police? Sadly, we will never know.
